China might be stealing a march on the world yet again. The government is targeting to build at least 1,200 hydrogen refueling stations for mobility across the country by 2025, which would mean that it would have more hydrogen stations than the rest of the globe currently boasts.
China's Hydrogen Refueling Stations: China has built more than 400 hydrogen refueling stations, with 280 in operation. Estimates vary, with some experts suggesting 250 active stations.
FCV Adoption Growth: The boom in hydrogen refueling stations is driven by the success of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and government plans to accelerate their adoption. China is projected to have 12,000-18,000 FCVs on the road by 2024.
Local Government Targets: By 2025, 29 local authorities have set plans to build more than 1,200 hydrogen refueling stations. Guangdong aims for 200 stations, while Hebei, Shaanxi, Jiangsu, and Shandong each target 100.
Revised Targets: Some local governments revised their 2025 targets. Jiangsu, Chongqing, and Hebei doubled their goals, while Guangdong and Shanghai reduced their targets.
Hydrogen Station Rollout Outside Pilot Areas: Provinces like Shandong, Jilin, and Guangxi plan to expand hydrogen refueling stations in response to national plans and FCV adoption goals.
Government Support: Since 2020, China has subsidized hydrogen mobility and offered funds to local authorities to promote hydrogen vehicles, addressing fossil fuel dependency and urban air pollution.
Strategic Plans for Hydrogen: China's Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicle Technology Roadmap (2016) set ambitious targets of 50,000 FCVs and 300 refueling stations by 2025, and 1 million FCVs and 1,000 stations by 2030.
Initial Pilot Cluster Results: Early pilot city clusters for FCVs showed mixed results, with Beijing meeting its targets while other clusters lagged behind.
Current Incentives: The government now offers incentives through tax reductions and subsidies ranging from $3,200 to $7,900, depending on the type of vehicle and fuel cell capacity.
Future Outlook: By 2035, China aims to have 2,000 hydrogen refueling stations. Hydrogen mobility is expected to be a key driver of hydrogen consumption in China, contributing to the government’s goal of 50,000 FCVs by 2025.
Hydrogen Energy Industry Growth: The China Hydrogen Alliance forecasts a $14 billion hydrogen energy sector by 2025, with green hydrogen contributing 10% of the nation's hydrogen demand by 2030.
