Green Hydrogen Takes Off in Himachal Pradesh: SJVN Flips the Switch on India's First Multi-Purpose Pilot Project

2 May 2024

Get ready for a hydrogen revolution! India has taken a major leap forward in clean energy with the inauguration of the country's first multi-purpose green hydrogen pilot project.

Here's the lowdown on this groundbreaking development:

Project Powerhouse:

  • Location:  Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (NJHPS) in Himachal Pradesh

  • Developed By:  Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVN)

  • Green Goals:  This project paves the way for large-scale green hydrogen production in India.

How It Works:

  • Clean Fuel Creation:  The project will generate green hydrogen by splitting water using an electrolyzer powered by renewable energy.

  • Dual Power Play:  The green hydrogen will be used for two purposes:

    • Coating Power:  Fuel for high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coating of turbine parts at NJHPS.

    • Clean Electricity:  Generating electricity via a 25 kW fuel cell.

Project Impact:

  • Daily Green Generation:  The pilot project aims to produce 14 kg of green hydrogen per day.

  • Safe Storage:  The hydrogen will be stored in pressurized tanks with a total capacity of 12 cubic meters.

  • Renewable Energy Source:  The entire process will be powered by SJVN's 1.31 MW solar power plant.

This innovative project is a significant step towards a clean and sustainable energy future for India. By demonstrating the viability of green hydrogen production, SJVN is paving the way for wider adoption of this clean fuel source!
