MSRDC Powers Up with Solar Plans: Samruddhi Mahamarg to Shine Bright with Clean Energy

Highway Authority Embarks on Green Initiative to Reduce Costs and Promote Sustainability

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is taking a big leap towards a greener future by setting up a massive solar power project along the iconic Samruddhi Mahamarg. This project aims to not only illuminate the highway but also power existing and upcoming MSRDC projects across the state.

Sun Powering the Road Ahead:

  • The project, spearheaded by MSRDC's special purpose vehicle Mahasamruddhi Renewable Energy Ltd (MREL), aims to generate 150-200 MW of solar power.

  • This clean energy will not only light up the Samruddhi Mahamarg but also power MSRDC offices, tunnels, and interchanges in Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and Aurangabad.

  • Upcoming highways like the Mumbai-Pune missing link and Samruddhi Mahamarg Igatpuri tunnels are also set to benefit from this green initiative.

Benefits Abound:

  • This project is expected to significantly reduce MSRDC's monthly power bills, currently ranging from ₹ 10 lakh to ₹ 25 lakh per interchange on the Samruddhi Mahamarg.

  • Reduced carbon footprint and a greener Samruddhi Mahamarg corridor are additional benefits of this solar initiative.

Planning and Implementation:

  • MREL has issued a request for proposal (RFP) to appoint a consultant for a feasibility study and detailed project report (DPR).

  • Different models for solar energy consumption, like net metering, are being explored, with the final model chosen based on the consultant's recommendations.

  • An existing 9 MW solar power project at two interchanges on the Samruddhi Mahamarg is also in the process of finalizing a contractor.
