NTPC Achieves Milestone with Zero-Emission 'Hydrogen Cooking' Demonstration

16 Jan 2024

NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance (NETRA), the research and development arm of NTPC, has achieved a significant breakthrough by successfully demonstrating hydrogen cooking using hydrogen supplied from its existing Green Hydrogen plant in Greater Noida. The demonstration showcased the practicality and environmental benefits of hydrogen in everyday cooking applications.

Green Hydrogen Powers Clean Cooking

The demonstration utilized hydrogen burners designed specifically for cooking purposes, incorporating them into modified cookstoves to prepare food. It's noteworthy that the emissions from hydrogen burners are solely water vapor, contributing to zero carbonaceous elements. The success of the hydrogen cooking showcase highlights the versatility of green hydrogen as a clean energy source that supports environmental and sustainability goals across diverse applications.

NTPC's Ongoing Hydrogen Initiatives

NTPC has been actively involved in various hydrogen-related projects, showcasing its commitment to green energy transitions. Among its notable achievements are:

  1. Blending Project: NTPC has successfully commissioned a blending project that incorporates green hydrogen with Piped Natural Gas (PNG) at Kawas.

  2. Green Hydrogen Mobility: A green hydrogen mobility project in Leh is on track to be commissioned, emphasizing the expansion of hydrogen applications in transportation.

  3. Microgrids for Indian Army: NTPC is progressing with a project to set up green hydrogen-based microgrids in remote locations, catering to the energy needs of the Indian Army.

Environmental Impact and Future Prospects

The demonstration of hydrogen cooking adds another dimension to the potential applications of green hydrogen. With the emission from hydrogen burners being only water vapor, it not only ensures a clean cooking process but also aligns with the broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

Arne Ballantine, CEO of Ohmium, Shaswattam, Executive Director of NETRA, and other senior officials present during the demonstration reiterated the importance of green hydrogen in driving sustainable energy solutions. The successful hydrogen cooking showcase marks a crucial step forward in integrating green hydrogen into everyday life, making it a practical and eco-friendly choice for households and industries alike.

As NTPC continues to advance its initiatives in the green hydrogen space, the hydrogen cooking demonstration serves as a testament to the potential of hydrogen in revolutionizing various aspects of our daily lives and contributing to a cleaner, greener future. The company's ongoing projects underscore its role as a key player in India's transition to a hydrogen-based economy.
