NTPC and Chidambaranar Port Collaborate to Create Green Hydrogen Hub

10 Sept 2023

In a significant partnership, NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL), a subsidiary of India's largest power utility, NTPC Ltd, has joined forces with the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) to establish a green hydrogen hub in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. This ambitious collaboration aims to drive the production and utilization of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and green methanol, both domestically and for export purposes.

NTPC and Its Green Energy Arm

NTPC, with a formidable total installed capacity of over 73 GW, stands as India's largest power utility. Its subsidiary, NGEL, was established to spearhead renewable energy initiatives, including ventures into green hydrogen, energy storage technologies, and continuous renewable energy generation.

The NTPC Group has set an ambitious target of achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, with a substantial pipeline of projects, over 3 GW of which is already operational.

The Role of VOCPA

V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways of the Government of India, plays a pivotal role in this collaboration. VOCPA has been identified by the Ministry as a strategic location for developing a green hydrogen and green ammonia refueling hub for green shipping.

Furthermore, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has designated VOCPA as the nodal port on the East Coast for the extensive development of port infrastructure and logistics, with a specific focus on offshore wind and large-scale green hydrogen projects.

The Vision of the Green Hydrogen Hub

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between NGEL and VOCPA outlines their shared commitment to creating a robust green hydrogen hub. This hub will serve as a nucleus for the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable energy sources, holds tremendous potential as a clean and sustainable energy carrier.

One of the key objectives of this collaboration is to facilitate the export of green hydrogen and related products, contributing to India's position in the global green energy market. Simultaneously, the hub will cater to domestic demand, supporting various sectors in their transition to cleaner energy alternatives.

A Sustainable Energy Future

As the world pivots towards greener and more sustainable energy solutions, partnerships like the one between NGEL and VOCPA are pivotal. They demonstrate a shared commitment to harnessing the potential of green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as green ammonia and green methanol, as vital components of India's energy transition.

This collaboration not only aligns with India's renewable energy goals but also contributes to reducing carbon emissions and fostering innovation in the energy sector. It represents a significant step toward a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future for India's energy landscape.

In conclusion, the NGEL-VOCPA partnership highlights the growing importance of green hydrogen in India's energy strategy and reinforces the nation's position as a leader in renewable energy adoption. This green hydrogen hub serves as a beacon of progress, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
