PM Modi Unveils Mega Infrastructure Boost: Transforming Tamil Nadu's Maritime and Green Energy Landscape
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects totaling ₹17,300 crore during his visit to Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. Among the key unveilings was the inauguration of the ₹7,000 crore Outer Harbor Container Terminal at V.O. Chidambaranar Port.

Outer Harbor Container Terminal Inauguration: The inauguration of the Outer Harbor Container Terminal at V.O. Chidambaranar Port, with an investment of ₹7,000 crore, marks a significant milestone in Tamil Nadu's maritime development. The port has demonstrated robust growth, witnessing a 35% increase in traffic over the past decade.
Green Hydrogen Hub Port: PM Modi emphasized the transition of V.O. Chidambaranar Port into the country's first Green Hydrogen Hub Port. The green initiatives include a desalination plant, hydrogen production, and a bunkering facility, aligning with India's commitment to sustainable and renewable energy.
Harit Nauka Initiative: Launching India's first indigenous green hydrogen fuel cell inland waterway vessel under the Harit Nauka initiative, PM Modi showcased the government's commitment to green transportation and environmental sustainability.
Rail Sector Development: Dedication of rail projects, including the doubling of the Vanchi Maniyachchi - Nagercoil rail line, highlighted the achievements in the rail sector. Over the last decade, Tamil Nadu witnessed the completion of 1,300 km long rail projects, electrification of 2,000 km of railway lines, and the introduction of 5 Vande Bharat trains.
Road Infrastructure Boost: Inauguration of four major road projects valued at ₹4,586 crore aims to enhance connectivity, reduce travel time, and stimulate trade and tourism in Tamil Nadu. PM Modi reiterated the government's commitment to investing ₹1.5 lakh crore in the state's road infrastructure.
Sustainable Future Vision
With a vision for a sustainable future, PM Modi highlighted the green initiatives at V.O. Chidambaranar Port, emphasizing the importance of electrification and doubling of rail lines for improved connectivity in South Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Tourist facilities in 75 lighthouses across 10 States/UTs were dedicated, showcasing the tourism potential in coastal regions.
