Strikes Massive Deal to Power AM Green's Green Ammonia Facilities
In a groundbreaking move for the renewable energy sector, SJVN Green Energy Limited (SGEL), the green energy arm of state-run SJVN, has inked a deal with AM Green Ammonia Holdings, a subsidiary of the Greenko Group, to supply a whopping 4.5 GW of renewable energy. This contract is set to support AM Green’s ambitious plans to produce five million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of green ammonia by 2030, making it one of the world's largest carbon-free energy supply agreements.
A Major Milestone in Renewable Energy
The deal, signed on June 26, will see SGEL providing renewable energy to AM Green’s upcoming green ammonia production facilities across India. These facilities aim to start with an annual production of one million tonnes of green ammonia in the first phase and ramp up to five mtpa in the second phase, equivalent to one million tonnes of green hydrogen.
Phased Execution and Integration
SJVN plans to execute the project in three phases, beginning with a 1,500 MW delivery within two years. SGEL will establish the necessary solar and wind capacities, while AM Green will integrate this with pumped hydro storage to ensure a steady and reliable green energy supply.
Strategic Partnerships and Global Impact
Mahesh Kolli, founder of Greenko Group and AM Green, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “This partnership demonstrates AM Green’s emerging leadership position as a global clean energy transition solutions platform while contributing to India’s ambition of emerging as an exporter of reliable, sustainable, and lowest-cost green molecules and its derivatives, accelerating industrial decarbonization globally.”
Ajay Singh, CEO of SGEL, highlighted the significance of the project as SJVN’s entry into supplying power to private sector entities. "With our ambitious capacity addition targets, SJVN is actively pursuing opportunities across the spectrum and is keen to take forward this arrangement with AM Green," Singh added.
Expanding Global Footprint
AM Green is rapidly expanding its global footprint, with notable agreements supporting its green hydrogen ambitions. In October 2023, Malaysia-based Gentari Sdn Bhd, through its subsidiary Gentari International Renewables Pte Ltd, signed a deal to jointly invest in AM Green Ammonia Holdings BV. Singapore's sovereign wealth fund, GIC, is also an investor in AM Green, with Gentari holding a 30% stake.
Robust Pipeline of Power Offtake Agreements
AM Green boasts a robust pipeline of power offtake agreements, including partnerships with NTPC Renewables and Gentari, positioning itself ahead of competitors in green ammonia capacity addition both in India and globally. Earlier this year, Greenko ZeroC—the green ammonia production arm of AM Green—secured a deal to supply renewable ammonia to Norway’s Yara Clean Ammonia, the world’s largest trader and distributor of ammonia.
Pioneering Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Production
AM Green is also at the forefront of green hydrogen and ammonia production, having signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Envision Energy International in January for wind turbine manufacturing and the development of green hydrogen projects, as well as the establishment of net zero industrial parks.
Conclusion
This landmark agreement between SJVN Green Energy and AM Green underscores the critical role of renewable energy in driving sustainable industrial growth. As India moves closer to its National Green Hydrogen Mission targets, this partnership sets a new benchmark for global clean energy transition solutions.
