The government aims to produce 5 million tons of green hydrogen by 2030, according to the finance minister.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman declared in her Budget speech on Wednesday that the government has set a goal of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030.

The Indian government has taken a major step towards realizing its vision of making the country energy independent and decarbonizing critical sectors. On January 4, 2023, it approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission with an initial investment of Rs 19,744 crore. The mission aims to stimulate demand, production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen, and to attract over Rs 8 lakh crore in investments by 2030.

The mission will play a critical role in advancing India's transition to a low-carbon and sustainable energy system, and will provide the necessary infrastructure and support for the development of the green hydrogen industry.
